Not badIt’s a good garden for a child and my daughter is happy with it. Just wish there was a little better info on it in manual and before purchase. Would have gone with the sprout probably. Normal seed pod holders don’t fit in this. You have to use seeds and the grow moss (or whatever it’s called). I bought pods and had to cut the plastic holders off and drop in the moss part with the seeds into the unit. Also The Herbie seems a bit cheap in construction. Almost as is Aerogatden doesn’t make it and this one is contracted out. All I. All it’s a decent garden for a kid.

Nothing grows and it’s noisy.I wanted to love this. Winter is long in North Dakota, and fresh greens are rare. The kids had so much fun planting the seeds and measuring the fertilizer. The thought of peeking in the windows to watch the water bubbling and to see the roots growing is fascinating for my kids. I have two other aerogardens, which I highly recommend. This is junk. My kit came with everything, but the plants won’t grow. The first attempt at basil and oregano didn’t sprout. The cones grew mold within 3 days. I tossed them and tried again without the covers. The basil sprouted a sad little seedling. The oregano molded over. I’m on the third attempt at oregano, this time with different seed. Still nothing but mold. The same day I first started a garden in my herbie (23 days ago), I started salad and herbs in two other aerogardens. We’ve harvested the salad twice and it is still going strong, and the herbs are nearly ready to start harvesting. This is such a great idea for kids, but the “wow” factor does not make up for the fact that it is a faulty design that fails. They should put a window in a regular garden and charge the same price for something that will work. It would be nice if the seed pods were compatible with their other gardens, too. The built-in pod holders serves no purpose. It’s also very loud.
Update: it’s been 7 weeks since I got my herbie. I’ve replanted the oregano twice, both times with new sponges and new seeds, and still nothing but mold. The basil plant is now 4 inches tall, compared to the basil in my other aerogarden that I can’t harvest fast enough Or keep under a foot tall. The few leaves The kids have plucked from their herbie have been delicious but the kids are beyond disappointed that their garden doesn’t produce. I would love to return/exchange this but the amazon window is closed.

Outlived it's warranty by one monthWorked OK for a year. The air tubes clog every few weeks even though I'm using Reverse Osmosis water. I blow them out with air to unclog them. The last time I blew it out the cap on top the air tube assembly flew off and was never to be found. Without this cap there is no bubbles. The height is very limiting also.

Great idea, terrible implementationMy son was so excited when he received an Herbie for Christmas. He loves the windows that allow him to see the roots of the plants growing and the bright design. Unfortunately the Herbie is a poor substitute for a regular AeroGarden. First, it does not have an automatic timer for the light. That means my 8 year old, who has only recently learned to tell time, has to somehow remember to turn it on each morning and off each evening. That almost never happens and so the light winds up staying on all the time unless I happen to notice and turn it off at night. It also does not have an “add nutrients” reminder light. So again, my child has to remember to add nutrients every week and remember what day he is supposed to do it. The light on the unit is also fixed. There is no way to raise it up as the plants grow. This means you have to cut them back frequently, but that rarely yields enough of the herb to be useful or useable. Needless to say, that burden has also fallen to me. Further, the Herbie does not use regular grow seed pods, instead it requires moss cones and seeds. And since the variety of Herbie grow kits pretty limited and none of them really interest my son, I can’t even get him to pick a new kit now that we are finished with our first grow. He loves to care for our family AeroGardens, which are growing salad greens, herbs for tea, and flowers. But the Herbie is too difficult for him to keep track of and so he forgets to take care of it. And finally, the Herbie is so incredibly loud. It has plastic beads in it that rattle when the pump is working and bubbling. It is distracting and annoying.
If I could go back in time, I’d tell his grandparents to just buy him a Sprout instead. They are designed better, have all the useful features that make AeroGardens so great, you can order any seed pods you want, and because the front is clear, you can still see the roots growing.
I’ve been an AeroGarden user for 9 or 10 years and this is the first time I’ve ever been disappointed by a product. I wish we could exchange the Herbie and get a Sprout, but since it’s already been used, that’s not possible. I suspect it is just going to collect dust on a shelf after we finish with our first set of herbs. I’d advise parents to pass on the Herbie and just get a Sprout instead. Your kid will still learn growing skills and responsibility, but with a far superior and more user friendly product.

Herbie for the Grand Kids! After getting my own AeroGarden, I decided to send one to my Grand-children for Valentine's day. They loved it! They were so excited that my grand-daughter picked one of the sprouts a bit too soon. It was a good lesson for her to learn so patience. Now, we have it growing more so that she and her brother can try again when it is actually time to harvest.

Great Gift but missing Grow Sponges :'(I purchased a Herbie for our grandchildren's Christmas gift because I've been so happy with my Bounty Elite. They opened their present yesterday to find no grow sponges were included. This will require us to go online and order replacements. Disappointed in the lack of inspection before delivery but hopefully the unit will run properly once we order them.

Great learning activity for kidsI bought this a few weeks ago for my grandkids—elementary school age. They love it! Instructions were easy to follow with lots of pictures. Well written educational booklet with fun activities was included. The kids are learning about growing plants and responsibility for turning on lights and feeding nutrients. Their parents think it’s great too!
