There's green stuff growing on top of my AeroGarden seed sponges
If green stuff has developed on the top of your seed sponges, don't worry, it's just algae. Algae is a type of plant that likes to grow in places where air, water, and light meet. It is non-toxic and will not harm your plants, though some people may find it unsightly. Sometimes algae will grow because a label has come off a Seed Pod, allowing more light than usual to enter. If you would like to cover your Seed Pod to prevent light from entering and have lost the label, you can cut a suitable replacement out of a small piece of aluminum foil. Cut a circle out of a piece of aluminum foil, cut a hole in the middle (like a donut), and then carefully make a slit from the edge to the center so that you can slip it around the stems of the plants like a collar. This will deprive the algae of light.
There's white fuzz (mold) growing on top of my AeroGarden seed sponges
Sometimes people notice a white fuzz developing on the surface of their seed sponges. This is mold; mold spores exist virtually everywhere and can find a comfortable home in the humid, warm, and still conditions on top of a seed pod under a bio-dome. Mold does not harm your plants, prevent germination, or in any way impact the quality of your plants. In fact, it will soon disappear as your AeroGarden plants outcompete it for light, nutrients and water. However, some people just don’t like the idea of the mold, so here are a few things you can do to get rid of it:
-
Remove the bio-dome and don't replace it.
-
Scrape off the mold with your fingertip.
-
If the seed sponge is less than 1/2 inch below the label, push it down inside the grow basket to expose the mold to more air, which usually kills it.
-
The prongs on the bottom of the grow basket are flexible, and you can bend them in to support the seed sponge.
In our experience, mold occurs primarily on top of the seed sponge and does not inhibit germination or affect the seed. A good seed will germinate right through the mold, and the mold often disappears when the seedling starts to shade it.
